The Choice of Justice

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

One sunny afternoon in the palace of Emperor Akbar, beams of golden light flooded through the high windows, creating dazzling patterns on the cool marble floor. The emperor, perched upon his grand throne like a lion on a mountaintop, had a twinkle in his eye. He loved games, and today he had a tricky one in store.

“Listen closely, my clever courtiers!” he boomed, his voice echoing like a drum. “If I offered you a choice between justice and a shiny gold coin, which would you choose?” The courtiers sprang to their feet, tumbling over each other in their excitement. “Justice, Your Majesty!” one declared, puffing out his chest like a proud peacock. “Justice, always!” others chimed in, nodding like wise owls. They looked very noble, each thinking they were the cleverest of them all.

But then the emperor turned to his sharp-witted advisor, Birbal. “What about you, Birbal?” he asked, a storm cloud forming on his brow. “Which will you pick?”

With a calm smile, Birbal replied, “The gold coin.” A hush swept through the hall as if the air held its breath. Gasps filled the room—had Birbal made a blunder?

“BIRBAL! You would choose a coin over JUSTICE?” Akbar’s voice boomed, shaking the chandeliers.

Birbal, as peaceful as a quiet pond, replied, “Your Majesty, I choose only what I do not have.” Confusion danced across Akbar’s face like sparkles in the sunlight.

“Explain!” demanded the emperor.

Birbal grinned. “You have created a land where justice flows like a sparkling river. I swim in its refreshing waters daily! But my pockets are still quite empty!”

Laughter erupted like a bubbling fountain, filling the palace with joy. Even Akbar couldn’t help but join in, his laughter rumbling like distant thunder.

“Let’s not give Birbal just one gold coin,” Akbar declared with a sweeping gesture, “but a thousand!” The courtiers cheered, and Birbal bowed deeply, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

As he walked away, his pockets jingling with coins, Birbal felt richer than ever—not just in gold, but in the warmth of fairness surrounding him. In that magical moment, the palace glimmered brighter than ever, reminding everyone that some treasures are felt in the heart, not just held in the hand.
