One bright and sunny morning, in a palace that sparkled like a treasure chest, Emperor Akbar called all his courtiers to the great courtyard. The sun beamed down, making the marble floor glimmer like the stars in the night sky. With a twinkle in his eye, the Emperor announced, "I have a fun challenge for you! Can anyone explain the difference between truth and a lie using three words or fewer?"
The courtiers gasped and glanced at one another, their minds swirling in confusion. How could they explain something so big in just three tiny words? One brave courtier stepped up, his voice shaking, and declared, "Truth is real!" But the Emperor shook his head, “Too simple!”
Another courtiers chimed in, “Lies are dishonest!” Akbar frowned again. “Still not quite right!”
One by one, the courtiers made guesses, but each answer flopped like a fish caught on land. The air grew heavy with disappointment, and sad faces filled the courtyard. But not Birbal, the cleverest of all! He stood quietly at the back, a playful smile on his face, waiting for the right moment.
Noticing him, the Emperor turned and asked, “Birbal, what about you?” With a cheerful grin, Birbal raised his hand and showed four fingers. “Four fingers!” he announced boldly.
“Four fingers?” Akbar echoed, scratching his head in confusion. “Yes, Your Majesty!” Birbal twinkled with mischief. “The difference between truth and a lie is four fingers!” He pointed to his own face, demonstrating. “The space between your eyes and ears is about four fingers wide. What you see with your own eyes—that’s truth! Like the beautiful flowers blooming in the garden.” Leaning closer, he added, “But what you only hear with your ears? That could be just whispers or even lies!”
As the courtiers listened intently, a wave of understanding washed over them. Suddenly, the courtyard erupted in joyful laughter and applause! Akbar’s heart swelled with pride. “You explained everything with just ‘four fingers!'” he exclaimed.
From that day on, the courtiers learned to trust what their eyes showed them, realizing that the truth sparkled brightly in what they could see.
