The Husband's Secret

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a sunny day in the bustling city of Agra, Emperor Akbar and his clever advisor Birbal decided to disguise themselves as ordinary townsfolk. With big floppy hats and colorful scarves, they wandered through the lively market filled with shouting vendors and the delightful smell of spices. As they munched on sweet roasted nuts, laughter bubbled up like a fizzy drink.

Suddenly, a booming voice echoed from a nearby doorway. “YOU ARE COMPLETELY USELESS!” A woman stood there, hands on her hips, her glare sharper than a warrior's sword. “Do NOT come back until your chores are DONE!” Her husband, a strong man with arms like tree trunks, looked as sad as a puppy caught in the rain. He mumbled something and shuffled away, shoulders drooping.

Akbar, eyes wide with surprise, turned to Birbal. “Why doesn’t that strong man stand up for himself?”

Birbal chuckled, a twinkle in his eye. “Your Majesty, that’s one of the great secrets of the universe! All husbands are like this!”

The next day, Akbar called all the married men in the city to the grand palace. The men arrived nervously, as if facing a hungry dragon. “Listen closely!” boomed Akbar. “All husbands who listen to their wives, step to my RIGHT! Those who do NOT, step to my LEFT!”

Like a slow tide, every man shuffled to the right, heads down. But one short man with a proud chest boldly stepped to the left, standing alone like a brave knight.

“Who is this hero?” Akbar gasped in delight. “Birbal! Reward him!”

Birbal approached the man. “Why did you step left while all the others went right?”

With a puffed chest, the man replied, “Because my wife told me to stay away from large crowds!”

Laughter erupted in the courtyard like fireworks! Akbar laughed so hard his crown slipped, while Birbal tried to hide his giggles. Even the palace horses seemed to chuckle, tossing their tails in joy!

As the joyful sound filled the air, Akbar realized that sometimes, it’s good to find the fun in life’s little truths.
