The Royal Parrot

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

One bright and sunny morning, in a kingdom full of laughter and color, a worried palace servant named Ali burst into Birbal's cozy home, his face as pale as a ghost. “Birbal!” he squeaked, shivering like a leaf in a storm. “The royal parrot is… not moving! I found him this morning, cold and still in his cage!” Panic danced in Ali’s eyes. “If I tell the Emperor, I’ll be in big trouble! But if I don’t, he’ll find out and I’ll be doomed anyway! What should I do?” Ali sank into a chair, his heart heavy with fear.

Birbal, wise and crafty, thought for a moment, his eyes sparkling like stars. “Don’t worry, Ali. Go home and rest. I will fix this,” he said, his voice warm and reassuring.

The next day, Birbal strolled into the grand royal court, the sunlight glinting off his colorful cloak like a rainbow. The court buzzed with excitement as Birbal approached Emperor Akbar’s towering throne. He bowed deeply, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Your Majesty,” he began, his voice soft, “your parrot…”

The Emperor leaned forward, his heart racing. “What is it about my beloved parrot?” he asked, anxiety creeping into his voice.

Birbal paused for dramatic effect, letting the tension build. “Your parrot, Huzoor… I found him today in a most astonishing state. He was lying perfectly still, not eating, not drinking, and not even fluttering a single feather…”

A hush fell over the court, as silent as a sleeping forest. Akbar’s face turned pale. “Is he… dead?”

Birbal spread his arms wide, a playful smile curling on his lips. “Ah, Your Majesty, I never said that! Those words came from your mouth!”

The courtiers gasped, glancing nervously between the Emperor and Birbal. Understanding dawned on Akbar, bright as the morning sun. He realized that his harsh decree was unfair, punishing those who simply brought bad news. “Send for Ali,” Akbar said gently, a smile breaking through his worried expression. “He is forgiven, and that dreadful rule… it is canceled!”

With a wave of his hand, the Emperor ordered a lovely farewell for the parrot, surrounded by vibrant flowers and sweet melodies. Ali, waiting outside, felt a wave of relief wash over him as he hugged Birbal, his heart full of gratitude. Birbal bowed gracefully, and the sun shone brighter than ever. In that moment, everyone in the court learned that even the hardest truths can find their way into hearts filled with kindness and understanding.
