Birbal's Half-Brother

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a grand palace bursting with colors and sounds, there lived an Emperor named Akbar, who was wise and loved to laugh. Among his closest friends was a gentle nurse named Dai Ma, who had cared for him since he was a tiny prince. Akbar adored her so much that he called her his second mother. Dai Ma had a son, whom Akbar affectionately called his “half-brother.” Whenever this boy came to the palace, Akbar celebrated with enormous feasts and showered him with glittering gifts, making the courtiers roll their eyes in envy.

As days turned into weeks filled with joyous laughter, Birbal, the cleverest advisor in the land, grew increasingly worried. Important matters were slipping away like grains of sand, and even he, with his twinkling eyes and quick wit, was scratching his head, wondering how to bring the Emperor back to his duties.

One sunny morning, Akbar, bubbling with joy, exclaimed, “Birbal! You must have a half-brother too! Bring him to court — I would LOVE to meet him!” Birbal, stroking his chin, replied, “Your Majesty, my half-brother is quite young. Maybe he isn’t ready for such an important place.” But Akbar insisted, his excitement soaring like a kite in the sky.

The next day, as the sun cast golden beams into the grand hall, everyone held their breath in anticipation. Birbal entered, pulling a rope with all his might. Behind him was a small, brown creature with big, curious eyes. “MOOOOO!” the little calf bellowed, startling the courtiers. Akbar’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Birbal! Have you lost your mind?! Why have you brought a CALF into my royal court?!”

With a calm smile, Birbal bowed and explained, “Your Majesty, you asked to meet my half-brother. Since I was a baby, I drank the sweetest milk from this cow, just like a mother feeds her child. This lovely cow is my mother, and her calf is my half-brother!”

The court fell silent, and then, with a sudden burst of joy, Akbar’s laughter echoed through the halls, a melody of merriment. The courtiers soon joined in, their giggles bouncing off the walls. Akbar laughed so hard that his crown tilted sideways. “Oh, Birbal! You’ve shown me that maybe I’ve been too wrapped up in my love for my half-brother!”

From that day on, while Akbar still cherished his dear half-brother, he also remembered to balance his royal duties. Birbal’s cleverness had opened his eyes, and the laughter they shared became a magical reminder of what truly mattered.
