The Happy Now

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

On a bright and sunny afternoon, the air buzzed with the sweet scent of coconuts and the whispers of the sea. The gentle waves played on the sandy shore, making a soothing whoooosh… whoooosh sound that filled the heart with warmth. Under the cool shade of a big coconut palm, two friends lounged in a cozy hammock that swayed like a cloud in the sky.

Tenali Raman, with his eyes half-closed and a big grin, soaked up the golden sunlight filtering through the leaves. Beside him, his friend dreamily gazed at the sparkling sea. “What are you dreaming about?” Tenali asked lazily as the hammock rocked back and forth. His friend sighed with excitement. “Oh, I’m thinking about the day when I’ll be REALLY happy! I want a beautiful house by the sea, a lovely cart for my treasures, and a bank account that’s SUPER fat! I dream of a wonderful wife and four clever sons who will study hard, become rich, and take care of me when I’m old and gray!”

Tenali raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “And then?”

“Then,” his friend said, a dreamy smile lighting up his face, “I’ll kick back, feel the warm sea breeze on my face, and watch the sun melt into the ocean like golden butter. I’ll be perfectly happy!”

Suddenly, Tenali let out a loud laugh that rang like joyful chimes. The hammock shook wildly, swinging like a ship in a playful storm. His friend grabbed the sides, wide-eyed. “WHAT?! Why are you LAUGHING?”

Wiping tears of laughter from his eyes, Tenali declared, “Oh, dear friend, you just painted the picture of what you’re doing RIGHT NOW!” He pointed at the hammock. “Lying here? Check! Breeze on your face? Check! Sun warming your skin? Check! And feet up? CHECK!”

His friend blinked, looking from Tenali to the sparkling sea and back again. “But… but…” he stammered, searching for words.

“The only difference,” Tenali chuckled, “is that in your dream, you worked your whole life to get here, while right now, you’re in the very place you desire — for FREE!”

His friend’s mouth dropped open, then slowly closed as he took a deep breath. The gentle breeze tickled his cheeks, and the warm sun painted the clouds above in shades of orange and pink. Suddenly, laughter bubbled inside him like a fizzy drink. “I… I’m already happy!” he exclaimed, his voice full of wonder.

Tenali smiled softly at his friend. As they lay swinging under the coconut palm, the world around them sparkled with magic. They realized that happiness isn’t something to chase; it’s all around, waiting to be noticed and celebrated.
