The Fisherman and the Little Fish

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a cozy village nestled by a twinkling river, there lived an old Fisherman named Old Man Finn. Every day, he would wander to the riverbank, casting his colorful fishing line into the shimmering water, dreaming of the big fish he might catch. But today, the sun was setting, and his basket was almost empty, casting a shadow of worry over his face.

Just as he was about to pack up and head home, he felt a gentle tug on his line. With a heart full of hope, Old Man Finn began to reel in his catch. To his surprise, a tiny fish, no bigger than a shiny pebble, flopped wildly at the end of his line! “Please, kind sir!” squeaked the little fish, its scales glimmering like diamonds under the fading sunlight. “I’m way too small for a meal! Throw me back, and I promise to grow big and strong. Then you can catch me again for a feast!”

Old Man Finn scratched his head, a chuckle escaping his lips. “You’re a clever little fish, but why should I trade what I have for a promise?” The tiny fish wiggled, splashing water everywhere, its eyes wide with panic. “But I swear, I’ll become your best friend and grow into a big fish! Just give me a chance!”

Finn hesitated, glancing at the rippling river that sparkled with magic. What if a hungry heron swooped down? What if another fisherman caught the fish first? But the fish’s hopeful eyes danced like twinkling stars, and for a moment, his heart softened.

Finally, with a sigh, he gently put the little fish back in his basket. “Alright, little friend, you can stay with me for now.” As he walked home under a sky painted in shades of orange and pink, Old Man Finn felt warm inside. He had made a choice, and the tiny fish flopped around happily, grateful for its second chance.

That evening, as he enjoyed a delicious supper, Finn realized that sometimes, the little things in life can bring great joy. The river sparkled under the twinkling stars, and in that magic moment, he found happiness in the simple catch that brought him comfort.

The Moral of the Story
